A new study on the efficacy of Viagra and other drugs to treat female sexual dysfunction has found that men with severe female sexual dysfunction should stop taking the drug.
Sildenafil is a prescription drug that is sold under the brand name Viagra. The drug has been the most commonly prescribed drug in the UK for the treatment of sexual problems.
The researchers, led by Prof Sarah E. Hyshed, from the University of Nottingham, analysed data on more than 600 men with sexual problems, who had been taking a number of medicines, including sildenafil, to treat a variety of conditions, including:
The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022, showed that women with severe sexual dysfunction (SD) were significantly more likely to be prescribed Viagra than men who did not take the drug.
Women with severe sexual dysfunction had a four times higher rate of sexual satisfaction and were significantly more likely to be prescribed Viagra compared with women who did not take the medicine.
Eighty-three per cent of women with severe female sexual dysfunction did not seek medical attention and were generally treated with a lower-than-average dose of sildenafil, compared with just over one in five women. The study found that women with severe sexual dysfunction were also significantly more likely to seek medical attention, as were those who did not take the drug.
“Our results demonstrate that women with severe sexual dysfunction should stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention,” said Prof Hyshed.
“It is important to note that our results demonstrate that men with severe sexual dysfunction should stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention.
“Our results also highlight the need to improve the quality of medical care for men with sexual dysfunction and help them to seek help,” she added.
Viagra is a prescription drug, and some doctors may prescribe it for the treatment of other conditions, including:
The study is based on a sample of over 600,000 men from seven sexual health clinics across the UK.
It was reported in the medical journal, but has since been used for other conditions, including:
The research was supported by the Sexual Medicine and Health Service in the UK and by the Sexual Health and Wellness Initiative (SHBHDI).
The authors are grateful to all the men who contributed to the study.
Dr Sarah E. Hyshed, from the University of Nottingham, said: “The results of this study provide important support for our commitment to improving the quality of medical care for sexual dysfunction in men.
"Women with severe sexual dysfunction should stop taking the drug and seek immediate medical attention and seek alternative treatment options.
"This is an important finding from our analysis of data, as it demonstrates the need for further research and improvement of our medical care for this condition.
"These results are a major step forward in the ongoing research on effective treatment and prevention of sexual dysfunction in women, as well as a positive impact on the lives of women suffering from this condition.
"For further information and guidance on the research, please visit the National Sexual Health Initiative website or visit.”
